World Breastfeeding Week 2009 October 1st to 7th.
Theme: Breastfeeding Saves Lives- Protecting Infant Health Everyday and in Emergencies.
In Emergencies, Breastfeeding Is a Lifeline
In October, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated in Canada. This year’s theme focuses on the importance of supporting breastfeeding before, during and after emergencies.
In Public Health, we often are discussing emergency preparedness. From floods to flu pandemics, breastfeeding protects infant health everyday and is a lifeline in crisis. Breastfeeding is the one safe and secure source of food and fluid for infants – instantly available, providing active protection against illness and keeping an infant warm and close to his/her mother.
AHSC is proud to be working towards the “Baby-Friendly” designation, which is a global evidence based program that encourages hospitals and community health facilities to promote, protect and support breastfeeding.
With “Baby-Friendly” care, we help mothers to succeed with breastfeeding so that during an emergency, young children are not put at risk due to inadequate feeding but are able to receive their mother’s milk.
